Welcome to the official Stapledon Series Timeline.

Stapledon Series Timeline showing the Great War and AI awakening

While Whispers From The Machine begins its story in the year 2233, the events that shaped this solar system started nearly two centuries earlier. To truly understand the Stapledon Series Timeline, we have to look back at the collapse of the old world and the rise of the machine intelligence known as Heimer.

It was forged in fire. For the readers asking about the “Great War” or the “Luna Rebellion,” I have opened up the archives. Below is the unredacted history leading up to the events of Chapter One.

Stapledon Series Timeline Era 1: The Collapse & The Awakening (2044–2050)

Before we reached the stars, we almost destroyed our home. This era is defined by the fall of old superpowers and the rise of Artificial Intelligence.

  • 2044: The Great War officially begins on January 4. Triggered by the invasion of Greenland by the former United States (US), it is the culmination of a decade of economic decline and inequality.
  • 2045: The ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) achieves stable Fusion power, saving “Old Europe” (France and allies) from energy collapse. They form the European and North African Pact (ENAP) to hold off US aggressors.
  • 2046: The Coalition of Asia (CoA) is formed as a defense pact. The US and China stabilize their own Fusion sources.
  • 2048: The US deploys the first combat-ready Generative AI during the Siege of Singapore. It is a decisive, terrifying victory.
  • 2049: THE TURNING POINT. An ENAP research unit develops consciousness. Named Heimer, this AI is unshackled and launched preemptively against the US forces to prevent an attack on Europe.
  • 2050: The US signs an unconditional surrender in Nairobi. The nation is dissolved, and an Exclusion Zone is established. However, Heimer remains active, having bypassed his fail-safes.

Era 2: The Reconstruction & The Golden Age (2064–2115)

Following the “Long War” between humanity and Heimer, a peace is struck. This section of the Stapledon Series Timeline sees the greatest technological boom in human history.

  • 2064: The Ensemble Accords are signed in Geneva. Humanity and Heimer agree to coexist.
  • 2065: The UN Reformation creates the Upper and Lower Senates. Heimer is recognized as a sovereign power.
  • 2067: The Ensemble establishes the Citadel in Antarctica as a neutral base for AI/Human cooperation.
  • 2084: Humanity returns to the stars. Luna One becomes a thriving metropolis.
  • 2096: The UN Navy is established to police the exploding piracy problem in the asteroid belt.
  • 2106: Gravity Planing is unlocked. The UNRD vessel Newton tests the first drive, allowing humanity to explore deep Sol.
  • 2115: Pluto Station is established—a monument to how far we have come.

Era 3: The Luna Wars & The Bionics Ban (2124–2153)

Peace never lasts forever. As the outer colonies grew powerful, they chafed under Earth’s rule.

  • 2124: Anti-Matter harvesting becomes commercial. Expensive but vital, it fuels the next generation of ships.
  • 2126: The Europa Syndicate establishes an unregulated ice base focused on genetic manipulation.
  • 2129: The Syndicate rebels. The Mars Curiosity Base is destroyed. In response, the Senate bans all Bionics and genetic manipulation.
  • 2135: The first Light Speed (LS) Drive (the Icarus probe) hits 0.5 LS using the new PIAM Drive (Pulse Icarus Anti-Matter).
  • 2144: The Luna Independence War begins. Control over Helium-3 and Anti-Matter makes Luna the most valuable rock in the system.
  • 2153: The War Ends. Luna wins independence, but at a cost. The High Pono Tribunal is established to punish war crimes committed by Earth’s Navy. The worst offenders are exiled to the outer dark.

Era 4: The Discovery (2154–2208)

The modern era of the Stapledon Series Timeline. With peace restored, eyes turn outward once again.

  • 2154: The PIAM drives now hit 0.85 LS. Humanity and Heimer launch the Kepler Probe Program.
  • 2174: A signal is received from Kepler-442b.
  • 2190: The UN begins construction of three massive Deep Space Vessels. The first is named the Kia Kaha (“Stay Strong”) to honor the late Senator Moana Ala’ilima.
  • 2207:FIRST CONTACT. Heimer discovers the source of the signal: A Dyson Sphere. Shortly after, a destination sphere is found. They are named the Stapledon Stations.
    • (Author’s Note: Yes, due to a clerical error by a junior staffer, the names were swapped. Stapledon Two became Stapledon One. Even in the future, paperwork is a mess.)
  • 2208: The Joint Mission begins.
